Ramadan Kareem & Iftar

Today is the start of the holy month of Ramadan and this year I thought I would try to get more involved in the tradition and festivities. I plan to document some of the events that takes place during Ramadan here in Dubai to give people an insight into what it is all about.

Ramadan:
Fasting during  daylight hours which includes not drinking, smoking or chewing gum is a real challenge in the summer months were the temperatures can reach 47oC and I ahve been told that the first few days are especially difficult as the body tries to adjust. The fast is traditionally broken at sunset 7pm with dates which are high in energy followed by a heavy meal an Iftar predominately rice and meat.

Iftar:
A colleague and I offered to help out with distributing the Iftar meals to the local community around Jumeirah, Palm & DIFC area. The packages consisted of fruit, juice and a biryani curry.  It was great to see different types of people coming out of their houses or walking down the street to collect their food packages around 6pm.

I would have liked to have taken a few photos but as this was my first time helping out and in respect to the locals I didn’t feel it was right to time or place to be snapping away. With many of the local women wearing the traditional Burqa to cover themselves as they were in public.
